Nerea Amorós Elorduy (PhD Architectural Design candidate at The Bartlett) and Tomà Berlanda (Director of the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Cape Town) have jointly curated the section on Rebuilding as part of the current ‘Africa’ exhibition at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. Their installation is the result of a four-year project to design educational buildings in Rwanda, and introduces visitors to the particular conditions of that country and the social role that architecture can play there.
A 1:1 mock-up of one of their buildings demonstrates the research that went into designing more than twenty early-childhood facilities via the architectural practice they co-founded in Rwanda. It offers a snapshot of their fieldwork investigations into the relationship between community empowerment and educational provision for children in rural communities and refugee camps.
Nerea is in the first year of her PhD studies, and is being supervised by Professor Murray Fraser in the Bartlett School of Architecture and Dr Camillo Boano in the Development Planning Unit.
