Izaskun Chinchilla Architects, the practice of Bartlett MArch Architecture Unit 22 tutor Izaskun Chinchilla, is one of two winners of the 2015 City of Dreams Pavilion Competition. Pending approvals and fundraising, ‘Organic Growth’ by Izaskun Chinchilla Architects and the ‘Billion Oyster Pavilion’ by New York-based BanG Studio will be assembled on Governors Island and open to the public for the summer 2015 season.
The proposal Organic Growth (pictured above), is a living and growing natural structure of hydrangeas arranged in a dome shape. Inspired by nature, it features recycled materials, such as broken umbrellas, old stools, and damaged bicycle wheels. The proposal draws awareness to the large amount of waste in landfills and provides solutions for recycling the pavilion after its use, such as indoor chandeliers and seasonal protection for outdoor spaces.
The wining design teams will work with FIGMENT, ENYA, SEAoNY, and Governors Island to select the final site for the projects, refine the designs, obtain necessary approvals, and fabricate and install the pavilions on the island. However, building two pavilions rather than one increases the amount of support required. Learn how you can donate to the project, here. The winners were announced by FIGMENT, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY).
