We are delighted to announce that two post-doctoral fellows, Dr Jonathan Rokem and Dr Evangelia Chrysikou, have been awarded Marie Curie Fellowships from the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme to spend two years conducting interdisciplinary research within the Space Syntax Laboratory at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

Dr Jonathan Rokem's project, 'Contested Cities Revisited: a Multidisciplinary, Multi-Scale Analysis of Urban Space' investigates the role of political, spatial and social factors in shaping urban segregation in Sweden and Israel. The cases have been chosen to compare ethnic diversity in contrasting political and welfare settings. The project will consider: (1) the nation state role in planning for urban segregation, (2) spatial segregation at the city scale, and (3) the role of local community and civil society in, and individual's perception of, these urban processes. Dr Rokem's research will be supervised by Professor Laura Vaughan, Director of the Space Syntax Laboratory.

Dr Evangelina Chrysikou's project, 'Planning and Evaluation Methodologies for Mental Healthcare Buildings' will examine the environmental mechanisms that influence the social and personal milieu of psychiatric space, considering how the environmental needs of the  mentally ill are met by healthcare facilities. The research will use space syntax methods in combination with a patient focused model for the evaluation of psychiatric environments to study a range of mental healthcare facilities in community settings. Dr Chrysikou's research will be supervised by Professor Alan Penn, Dean of the Bartlett.

The Marie Curie Fellowship scheme is funded by the European Union and aims to support international research partnerships and attract researchers to the EU.
