UCL Built Environment Clubs launched in Shanghai and Hong Kong
22 November 2012
Last month, several members of The Bartlett, including Dean Professor Alan Penn, helped to launch the first two UCL Built Environment Clubs (BECs) in Shanghai and Hong Kong, welcoming both UCL alumni and built environment professionals from across China to create a valuable support network to help strengthen China's urbanisation knowledge base and skills.
In Shanghai, guests representing many well known companies including host firm Aedas, were joined by built environment professionals from Chinese organisations and academics from a number of regional universities. At both events guests enjoyed the opportunity to network and learn about the possibilities to harness the expertise of UCL to bring added value to China’s urbanisation programme.
The Bartlett Director of Business Development, David Cobb, shared his vision for the success of the BECs through local ownership, “Key to the success of UCL BECs is the active leadership and support on the ground locally,” he said.
“UCL can initiate and get the ball rolling but expects that, following their 'soft launch', the BECs will develop and grow organically beyond initial informal social networking events in a manner reflecting local preferences and where value can best be added. This may include, for example, UCL visiting lectures, guest speaker dinners, site visits and Continuing Professional Development training events and workshops.”
Both launch events were very well attended and guests clearly enjoyed the chance to catch up with old friends and colleagues as well as discuss issues relating to their field with academics from The Bartlett and other areas of UCL.
To help its members keep in touch professionally following the launch, each BEC has also established LinkedIn networks dedicated to sharing information and resources in BEC cities.
