The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management was recently successful in attracting the Major Projects Association long term PhD grant award.

Alex Murray, a full time Research Assistant and part time PhD student is developing methods for comparing the operations of both privately and publicly financed infrastructure. The empirical research produced form applying these methods will shed an objective light on the assertion that procurement method is a significant determinant of operational performance. So far, under the expert supervision of Graham Ive and Dr. Andrew Edkins, two considerable analyses of social infrastructure have been produced concerning hospitals and schools. Findings from these suggest there are differences in aspects of operational cost and performance between facilities procured via the PFI procurement method, and those of more conventionally procured facilities. The MPA grant funding amounting to £6,000 over three years will be used to undertake industry consultations with a select group of MPA members to disseminate new findings as well as verify the accuracy of the central government datasets applied so far. The consultations will also serve to inform and guide the on-going PhD investigation to provide practitioner relevant findings and research implications.
