‘Reclaim Creativity! Arts in the Public Realm’ Summer Academy (21-27 June)
The challenge:
Arts can contribute a great deal to the democratisation of social, political and economic spheres. Urban development and regeneration experts are aware of the capacity of the Arts to create inclusive places and a sense of belonging for community members. However, there is a gap between the capability of Arts to strengthen communities, and the actual outcomes of development schemes that use art-based practices. Often, artists and Arts organisations feel as though they are contributing to negative outcomes for the communities they are a part of. Arts-based approaches to civic engagement, social inclusion and empowerment of residents in deprived neighbourhoods require a long-term outlook and meaningful engagement with local communities from the very outset.
The learning concept:
To address these challenges, the free 'Reclaim Creativity!' Summer Academy will deliver a programme of activities focusing on social and economic innovation through artistic practice in the public realm. It will bring together artists, cultural managers and researchers from across Europe with London's leading Arts organisations, cultural and creative enterprises, young East Londoners and students.
The objectives are:
- to share knowledge and experience of innovative approaches to arts in the public realm
- to promote and enable active involvement of local communities with place-based arts
- to design new public art interventions.
These objectives will be pursued through a programme of activities comprising:
- human-centred design training
- experiential learning
- site visits
- knowledge and best practice exchange
- programme of public events.
Activities will be delivered by experts from the academia, local government, private and community sectors from London and across Europe. Together we will explore possibilities for effective and equal participation in Arts and culture, and innovate for social inclusion. You will be trained in human-centred design and you will work in groups to design and prototype public space interventions.
This is a FREE Summer Academy with limited places for young people from East London and UK students.
