Economic Crisis, Heritage and Identity in Greece (ECHI)
18 January 2017
Overview
This project aims to examine how national identities are renegotiated during periods of crisis. The project focuses on the discursive analysis of a vast number of newspaper articles published since 2011 in the Greek press, soon after the economic crisis emerged. The project has identified that different forms of the tangible or intangible past are utilised to reconstruct identity and to re-establish a national image above. The selection of the past varies among political parties. A workshop took place in June 2014 bringing together scholars from across Europe to discuss the uses of the past in periods of economic crisis across Europe.
