Enter the ISH annual photo competition on the theme of Culture, Heritage and Climate Change

This year, we invite entries that capture the concept of Culture, Heritage and Climate Change.  Do you see the impacts of climate change on the heritage around you? Can your photo capture what you value before it is lost? How can we learn from the past and the present?

This competition is part of The Bartlett's climate campaign 'Together for climate action' which brings together the faculty's world-leading experts in the lead up to the COP26 climate summit.

Given the subject and the public concern over climate change, the competition is open to anyone who wishes to raise awareness of the risks and opportunities for culture and heritage in response to the climate crisis.

Culture, Heritage and Climate Change

The global environment is changing at an unprecedented rate, causing increasingly severe and previously unseen impacts on cultures and heritage. These impacts, while directly impacting on objects around us, also affect ways of living, human health, biodiversity and ecological systems, food production and other challenges to social and economic stability. These changes may last forever, and in many cases may cause the loss of something we value.

Conversely, cultures and heritage can provide opportunities to develop sustainable solutions to enable us and future generations to live lives less dependent on fossil fuels, more in tune with nature and the environment. How can we learn from past and present cultural practices to inform this transition? How can indigenous knowledge and traditional ways of living meaningfully enhances how to live in a way that balances our needs, those of future generations, as well as our planet?

We invite exploration and documentation of the impacts of climate change on cultures and heritage on a global scale, or perhaps in your neighbourhood. We encourage submissions that explore the role of culture and heritage in mitigation and adaptation measures, especially those that demonstrate how traditional ways of living and indigenous knowledge can inform our strategy for tackling the climate crisis.

The judges are not eligible to take part in the competition and all entries will be judged anonymously.

How to enter

By entering you agree to the competition rules as outlined below.

Entries should be emailed to bseer-communications@ucl.ac.uk.

Each entry must include photographer’s name and contact details as well as a title and a short description to accompany your submission.

The closing date for entries is Monday 23rd August 2021.

Terms & conditions

Competition rules

• Entrants can enter a maximum of three images.
• The theme of the competition is Culture, Heritage and Climate Change.
• This competition closes midnight 23rd August 2021.
• Entries should be emailed to bseer-communications@ucl.ac.uk. Each entry must include the title of the work, photographer’s name, and contact details and should not exceed 2MB.
• Entries must be saved as JPEG files with the photographer’s email address included in the file name. Please ensure images are of maximum possible resolution and quality.
• The images will be sent to the Judging Panel anonymously so that the decisions are impartial.
• All entries must be the original work of the entrant. The entrants must be the sole owner of copyright of all photographs entered and must have obtained permission of anyone featured in the entries or their parents/guardians if children under 16. Entrants must not have breached any laws when taking their photographs.
• UCL reserves the right to ask to see original files of any entries.
• Entrants will retain copyright to the photographs that they submit. By entering the competition all entrants grant UCL royalty-free non-exclusive licence for publication and exhibition of their photographs in print, on websites or in any other media. No fees will be payable for any of the above uses. While we make every effort to credit photographers, we cannot guarantee that every use of the photographs will include photographers' name.
• Prize winners will need to submit their name, address and bank details in order to organise their prize payment.
• By entering, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules.
• Images that are deemed to be inappropriate or in breach of these terms will be disqualified from the competition. This includes images that may be offensive, previously published, copyrighted (by somebody other than the entrant) or otherwise contrary to the spirit of the competition.
• UCL ISH reserves the right to amend these rules at any time.
