Abstract
When William Cecil, the first Lord Burghley was first Minister and Lord High Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth 1, she was reputed to have said of him “thy wit and my money have made thee rich Burghley”.

Successive generations of Cecil’s over the last 500 years have built on Lord Burghley’s position and success and helped create, what is today, one of England’s great Houses and Estates with exceptional collections of furniture, art, porcelain, silver, land, farms and property.

Burghley survives today as the finest Elizabethan Mansion House in England. It is surrounded by the largest Capability Brown landscape ever designed by the foremost landscape architect of his time, a House with 72 chimneys, more than 100 rooms, 35 State Rooms and 500 windows. However, it takes a significant revenue resource to keep it running and maintained. With an ever changing regulatory and legislative environment, how does Burghley utilize and deploy its significant property portfolios, enhance and stimulate new income streams, yet at the same time, manage, conserve and preserve its significant Heritage assets along the way?

Burghley House is surrounded by more than a 1,000 acres of its own listed parkland within which sit numerous architectural monuments. The House, Park and Estate welcomes over 750,000 visitors a year through the House, gardens and many events including the world class and leading international 4-star Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

This talk, given by David Pennell, will examine what Burghley is and how it uses its core fundamental assets such as the House, the collections, the land, the property assets and its businesses to grow its current and new revenue streams to provide a stable platform to go forwards for the next 500 years and create future Heritage whilst preserving and conserving its already rich heritage base.
