Statement of voluntary compliance with the code of practice for statistics
IGP recognises the critical role of robust, reliable, and transparent data in shaping effective policy and fostering public trust.
Introduction to IGP
The Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP) is a leading interdisciplinary research institute at UCL dedicated to transforming global understanding and pursuit of prosperity. We challenge traditional paradigms by redefining prosperity through comprehensive, innovative research prioritising inclusivity, sustainability, and equity. Our multidisciplinary approach uses policy innovation, robust community engagement, and advanced methodologies to provide policymakers, communities, and stakeholders with critical insights to address pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges.
IGP operates through its Prosperity Co-laboratories (ProCols) across multiple regions, including ProCol UK, ProCol Lebanon, and ProCol Africa. These ProCols serve as our operational platforms for conducting research and implementing prosperity frameworks in diverse contexts.
At the heart of IGP's work across all locations are our Prosperity Indices, such as the Citizen Prosperity Index (CPI) in London and the Maisha Bora Index in Dar es Salaam. These indices provide rich, multidimensional measures of prosperity based on extensive household surveys such as the East London Longitudinal Study 2021-2031. They are designed to impact local and regional policymaking through hyper-local, citizen-driven data.
IGP recognises the critical role of robust, reliable, and transparent data in shaping effective policy and fostering public trust. While we do not produce official statistics, we create large datasets and indices that serve as significant evidence for decision-makers. In line with our commitment to excellence, we have decided to voluntarily adhere to the UK Statistics Authority's Code of Practice for Statistics, fully embracing its core principles of Trustworthiness, Quality, and Value (TQV).
This voluntary compliance reflects our strategic goal of integrating TQV principles into our broader research agenda, particularly our core statistical outputs—our indices and survey data—which underpin IGP's contribution to reshaping how prosperity is understood and achieved.
Our commitment to the code
By voluntarily adopting the code, IGP commits to:
- Ensuring robust ethical standards, rigorous methodologies, and relevance of research.
- Strengthening the transparency, accessibility, and credibility of our outputs.
- Enhancing stakeholder confidence and fostering informed policymaking and community engagement.
This commitment will be supported by a structured implementation plan, including staff training, transparent documentation, and regular reviews across all ProCols and regions where IGP operates.
How IGP demonstrates trustworthiness, quality, and value
IGP ensures transparency, independence, and ethical governance:
- Operates as an autonomous research entity within UCL, adhering to rigorous ethical standards.
- Maintains publicly accessible documentation of methodologies and decision-making processes (see Further Information and Engagement below).
- Regularly engages stakeholders and transparently manages conflicts of interest.
- Implements stringent data governance and GDPR-compliant protection measures.
IGP is dedicated to methodological rigour and systematic validation:
- Employs peer-reviewed mixed-methods designs that ensure representativeness and minimise bias.
- Transparently communicates statistical techniques, limitations, accuracy assessments, and validation processes through open-access documentation (see Further Information and Engagement below).
- Conducts rigorous internal quality checks, supplemented by external methodological validation.
IGP prioritises societal relevance, accessibility, and innovation:
- Co-designs research questions and engages communities, policymakers, and stakeholders throughout research cycles (see Further Information and Engagement below).
- Publishes accessible, clear, and actionable outputs using visualisation and open-access principles (see Further Information and Engagement below).
- Continuously innovates methodologies to address complex challenges and support long-term decision-making.
Our path forward
Acknowledging continuous improvement as fundamental, IGP commits to:
- Continuously reflecting on and reviewing our practices against the Code.
- Strengthening documentation, transparency measures, and staff capabilities.
- Establishing robust monitoring systems and evaluation mechanisms to sustain compliance.
This statement, supported institutionally by the Director of IGP, Professor Henrietta L. Moore, signifies our commitment to embedding the Trustworthiness, Quality, and Value principles throughout our global operations. This dedication reinforces IGP’s position at the forefront of transformative, impactful research.
