The Learning Crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean: Urgent reforms
A talk with Jaime Saavedra
Dr. Jaime Saavedra’s enrichment lecture will focus on the urgent reforms needed to tackle the learning crisis in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a region highly characterized by inequality, a key challenge is to provide high-quality education services across many different coexisting socio-economic realities.
This session will offer students a chance to reflect on the relevance of education for economic growth. It will explore ways for public policy makers to design specific courses of action in relation to learning outcomes, with the aim of achieving change at scale.
Jaime Saavedra is Director of Human Development for Latin America and the Caribbean at the World Bank. He previously led its Global Education Practice and served as Global Director for Poverty Reduction. Peru’s Minister of Education (2013–2016), he holds a PhD from Columbia University and has taught at Harvard and leading Peruvian universities.
