Smell training: communicating olfactory perceptions
Join our ten-week in-person training course to develop key skills in communicating olfactory perceptions.
This is relevant to researchers who work with smells / use their nose as a source of knowledge. If you are conducting research involving other modes of sensory data, such as auditive or flavour, this course will help you develop skills to talk about sensory information.
Led by: Dr Cecilia Bembibre
This ten-session training course introduces methods for identifying, describing, and communicating olfactory experiences in heritage and research contexts. It draws on interdisciplinary approaches from sensory studies, heritage science, and olfactory practice.
Through a combination of short presentations and guided practical exercises, participants will develop skills in articulating smell using shared vocabularies and reflecting on the cultural and subjective dimensions of olfactory perception. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify and apply a standardised vocabulary to a set of individual odorants and mixed compositions.
No prior training or experience is required. Participants are asked to bring pen and paper to each session.
Sessions are delivered in person in small groups to support a focused and well-managed learning environment. The course is primarily intended for UCL staff and students, with limited places available for external participants.
Please note that the first session requires arrival 15 minutes in advance to complete the laboratory induction. Attendance of at least 90% of sessions is expected.
