In Practice III: Student Showcase

This annual showcase of student work connects two postgraduate programmes – Global Urbanism MASc and Public History MA. The students use the exhibition space to realise their research, reflecting on today’s social challenges relating to colonial legacies, urban change and belonging.

These works show a range of methodologies reflected in the teaching programmes located in the UCL East campus. A unique component of this show is the way students engage with the context of the area through site-based learning and collaborations with local organisations and communities.

Visitors are invited to explore the research themes of belonging in London and urban change through creative outputs like zines, interpretative installations, photography and film.

About Global Urbanism MASc

The Bartlett’s Global Urbanism MASc is the first urban Master’s degree to cut radically across arts, humanities, social sciences and technology studies, giving you the opportunity to specialise in urbanism as a challenge-driven and practice-oriented transdisciplinary field. Drawing from the distinctive breadth of UCL’s urban expertise, the programme equips students with state-of-the-art knowledge of urbanism – a term that embraces the social and cultural life of cities, and the numerous approaches and practices which set out to understand and shape urban futures.

About Public History MA

UCL’s Public History MA combines cutting-edge, research-led knowledge of how history is produced and engaged within public contexts, with training in the practices through which public historical understanding is created and communicated. Students benefit from UCL’s rich experience working with national heritage institutions, museums, and media outlets, as well as local communities in London, and from the university’s own role as a public history provider (through its three on-campus museums and special collections). They work with internationally recognised practitioner-researchers in the fields of oral history, documentary film and radio, exhibition curation, digital history, historical dramatisation and heritage-making.

About the UCL Urban Room

Located in Stratford at the UCL East Campus, the Urban Room is an experimental exhibition space for students, researchers, artists and community members. Based on the idea of an ‘urban room’ as a forum for community-based debate and dialogue, the UCL Urban Room brings together academic research and lived experiences of city residents to inspire meaningful education for our students and visitors. Users of the Urban Room are invited to join a dynamic network focused on issues of global urbanism, heritage, arts and social history. The space is equipped with oral history recording and archiving capabilities through its initiative of a Memory Workshop. Together, the Urban Room and Memory Workshop are supported by The Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment and the School for Creative and Cultural Industries at the University College London.
