Laminated Timber Vessels

This work iteratively explores how laminated components can be designed and fabricated with precision. The exhibited objects experiment with a range of formwork, timber species, veneer thicknesses, seam conditions and adhesives.

The design process developed to fabricate the vessels learns from pattern cutting and drapery techniques used in the clothing industry. All the pieces are formed from regular, unbroken sheets of veneer – bespoke digital simulation allows the properties of the material to guide the design process. The objects are therefore not modelled directly but instead found through varying the simulation’s flat pattern, seam properties and stiffness. By approaching lamination with garment design strategies, fabric-like folds can be materialised in timber.
