CASA Seminar Series: Valentine Quinio, Centre for Cities
City centres are places where people live, work, learn and play. They perform a number of different functions at the heart of urban areas. These numerous roles are often overlooked, with city centres boiled down to being places of retail, and high streets being a prominent feature on the news. And while the health of the high street is an indicator of a place’s economic and social struggles, not all high streets are in decline. In this session, Valentine will present some of the research Centre for Cities has conducted in the past few years looking at the relationship between the health of the high street and the performance of the city centre’s economy, as well as the impact of the pandemic and what that means for the future of commercial, residential and office space in UK’s city centres.
Valentine is a Senior Analyst at the Center for Cities. She joined the Centre in October 2019. She currently leads research on high streets and city centres and the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic; and she is also responsible for our work on environmental issues, including the role played by cities in reaching net-zero and addressing air pollution.
Before joining the Centre for Cities, Valentine was a research assistant in the Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge, where she worked on housing and planning policies.
She holds a degree in Economics and Sociology from La Sorbonne University, a MSc in Quantitative Sociology from the Ecole Normale Superieure and a MSc in Urban Policy from Sciences Po Paris and the London School of Economics.
