This event forms part of The Bartlett International Lectures Spring 2022.

This spring, each of the International Lectures will be curated by one of the school's programmes to inspire, invent, imagine, and provoke.

Abstract

The Making of Making (Architecture)

The lecture analyses MIAS Architects' work and design processes, and takes an in-depth look at everything that leads up to the delivery of a project. It showcases a journey through the process design by exploring seven concepts: "Between lines", "Everything could happen", "Oneiric spaces", "Assemblage", "Takeaway architecture", "X-rays" and "Ripped Surfaces". These concepts address some of the fundamental actions behind the creative and productive process of the studio. Josep will discuss models, sketches, collages, images and videos displayed in the recent exhibitions, including the MIAS room at the Paris Pompidou Centre and the DHUB Museum of Design in Barcelona. 

Speaker biography

Josep Miàs is Professor of Architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture and Visiting Professor at UNISS, Sassari, Italy. He is also acting Director of international architecture firm MiAS Architects, founded in 2000. MiAS Architects is internationally recognised for its innovative experimental projects and its practice combining sustainable technology, innovative manufacturing and cutting edge construction practices. The studio has won many international awards including, the Architizer Building of the World Award (2013), the Archdaily Building of the Year Award (2011), the Catalonia Construction Award (2009) and the AJAC Best Young Catalan Architect Award (2004). Josep has taught at a number of international universities including the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona, the Staedelschule, Frankfurt, Germany and Harvard GSD.
