About
How can manufacturing knowledge be utilised to create value within the realm of design?
“Manufacturing”, a term largely dependent on our understanding of the industrial revolution, is laden with knowledge and experience that is rarely applied to the design of our built environment. How can knowledge of manufacturing and digital design tools challenge building culture in order to enable sustainable, informed, and materially intelligent design solutions? Grappling with these questions, Design for Manufacture MArch students at The Bartlett School of Architecture will present the outcome of their research projects.
“Architectural Ceramics” formed the starting point of projects this year, serving as an anchor point for students’ research activities. As one of the most abundant naturally occurring materials on the planet, ceramics are attracting renewed interest in meeting current social, economic, and environmental challenges. Recent advancements in engineering, computational design, and digital manufacturing have created new opportunities for innovation, leading to the re-emergence of ceramics as a versatile, sustainable, and culturally inspiring material in architecture.
The event will be punctuated with a keynote lecture by Paul Michael Pelken (13th December, 17:30).
Paul Michael Pelken is an experienced registered architect and innovator with a consistent track record of award winning and patented developments in design, architecture, and engineering. Building upon his foundation as a German carpenter and builder, he has extensive experience working on projects ranging from industrial design to large scale architectural structures, and has practiced in Germany, Italy, the UK, USA and China. His work has been widely published and exhibited in high level professional forums, design, industry, and museum venues.
He has lectured and contributed to over 40 conferences internationally that focus on innovation in the built environment. Michael is founding partner of London based P+ Studio and Consulting. In 2017 he joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and was made Senior Associate in 2018. In 2019 he was appointed as Honorary Visiting Professor at City, University of London, followed by appointment as Visiting Professor at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in 2021.

The Bartlett Fifteen Show
The Bartlett Fifteen Show is a public exhibition celebrating fifteen months of innovative work by graduating Design for Manufacture MArch, Design for Performance & Interaction MArch and Situated Practice MA Master’s students. The work exhibited is diverse and forward-thinking, exploring and creating new forms of practice. The exhibition will include films, performances, structures and ephemera.
