How might COVID-19 change ideas about the healthy city and the role of planning in attaining it? Ideas about healthy environments are varied—from healthy built environments and collaborative healthy cities to age-friendly communities and smart health environments. Focusing on high- and middle-income countries, this talk examines implications of the pandemic for ideals of a healthy place. COVID-19 has fostered experimentation, highlighted inequalities, upset distinctions between public and private actions, and been costly. This talk will address what has been tried to date and is worth keeping, and where more substantial changes are still needed to create healthier places.

Trained in planning and architecture, Ann Forsyth works mainly on the social aspects of physical planning and urban development. The big issue behind her research and practice is how to make more sustainable and healthy cities. Her current research focuses on developing healthier places in a suburbanizing world, with overlapping emphases on aging and planned communities. She is Editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association and author or co-author of five books and numerous refereed journal articles, chapters, reviews, and editorials.
