Innovations include new approaches to employment, ageing and chronic health conditions. Transformation is achieved through an emphasis on human relationships supported by technology. Hilary’s current work focuses on the need for a ‘fifth social revolution’: to enable widespread flourishing in this century as work, society and our economies go through deep structural change. Hilary’s book Radical Help on the future of welfare was published to widespread acclaim in June 2018. Her TED talk on the future of social systems has had over 750,000 views. Hilary was educated at Oxford, Sussex and the Open University. She is currently a Visiting Professor at the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. Hilary has been recognised by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader and was named UK Designer of the Year in 2005 for her work pioneering social design. She was awarded an OBE in 2019 for services to the welfare state.

Her focus is on the socio-economic impact of technical change and how it transforms opportunities for growth and development. Her 2002 book ‘Technological Revolutions and Financial Capital: The Dynamics of Bubbles and Golden Ages’ had a great influence on our understanding of role of finance in the emergence and diffusion of technological revolutions and the connection of this to financial crises. She is currently working on Beyond the Technological Revolution, a four-year research project funded by Anthemis UK, which builds on her past work by further examining the role that government and civil society play in shaping technological revolutions. Her career began in the Venezuelan civil service and she has consulted for governments, international corporations and multilateral organisations.

She is also the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor Emerita of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011, she served as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State, the first woman to hold that position. Upon leaving the State Department she received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for her work leading the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, as well as meritorious service awards from USAID and the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe. Prior to her government service, Dr. Slaughter was the Dean of Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs (formerly the Woodrow Wilson School) from 2002–2009 and the J. Sinclair Armstrong Professor of International, Foreign, and Comparative Law at Harvard Law School from 1994-2002. She has written or edited seven books, including 'The Chessboard and the Web: Strategies of Connection in a Networked World', 'Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family', and 'The Idea That Is America: Keeping Faith with Our Values in a Dangerous World'. She is also a frequent contributor to a number of publications, including The Atlantic, the Financial Times, and Project Syndicate. In 2012, she published Why Women Still Can’t Have It All, in The Atlantic, which quickly became one of the most read articles in the history of the magazine and helped spark a renewed national debate on the continued obstacles to genuine full male-female equality.

Immy is an active member of Project 00 and the National Lottery Community Fund Advisory Fund. Immy is part of the Doughnut Economics Action Lab Advisory Team, a Birmingham Hippodrome Trustee, a Birmingham Open Media (BOM) Board Member and an Inclusive Economy Partnership Board Champion. As a founding director of Impact Hub Birmingham, open between 2015 – 2019, Impact Hub Birmingham’s mission was to build a fairer more equal and just city, through people, place and open movements. Immy has also run the TEDxBRUM talks between 2012 and 2017. Immy’s work has been widely recognised and in 2018, Impact Hub Birmingham was named aa a NESTA New Radical. In 2019, she was granted an Honorary Doctorate by Aston University’s School of Life and Health Sciences and in 2020 she was awarded a prestigious Ashoka Fellowship.

She is winner of international prizes including the 2020 John Von Neumann Award, the 2019 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values and the 2018 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. She was named as one of the '3 most important thinkers about innovation' by the New Republic and one of the 25 leaders shaping the future of capitalism by Wired, her highly-acclaimed book 'The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths' investigates the critical role the state plays in driving growth—and her book 'The Value of Everything: making and taking in the global economy' looks at how value creation needs to be rewarded over value extraction. She is a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisors; the South African President’s Economic Advisory Council; the OECD Secretary General’s Advisory Group on New Growth Narrative; the UN’s Committee for Development Policy (CDP) and recently the Special Advisor for the Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation in the European Commission, authored the 'Mission-Oriented Research & Innovation in the European Union' turning “missions” into a crucial new instrument in the European Commission’s Horizon innovation programme.
