The Healthcare Team and Distributed Visibility in Hospital Wards

Rosica Pachilova explores a brief history of the nature of nurse work and critiques some of the gaps in current approaches to healthcare-based communication and teamwork, offering a new metric called, Spaces for Communication Index (SCI) that she developed as part of her PhD. 

SCI is an objective method that can be used during the design stages of hospitals in which communication is of high importance. It helps architects and planners define the location of functional spaces in order to design a more effective layout that supports better performance. 

The content discussed in this talk will form part of a book chapter in a forthcoming book on healthcare edited by Dr Julie Zook (Texas Tech University) and Dr Kerstin Sailer (UCL).

Biography

Rosica Pachilova has experience in workplace consultancy and has worked on several research projects at UCL. She recently finished her PhD at The Bartlett School of Architecture, in which she investigated how hospital ward layouts influence the work processes and communication patterns of healthcare providers and how this affects the quality of care provided to patients. Together with Dr Kerstin Sailer, Rosica won the 2019 RIBA President Award for Research in the annual theme ‘Building in Quality’ for their newly developed metric SCI.

This academic seminar series features researchers sharing their findings, discussing their ideas and showing work in progress from The Bartlett's internationally renowned Space Syntax Laboratory. Seminars are moderated by PhD candidate Sepehr Zhand. They are open to the public and attended by Bartlett’s staff and students.
