About this seminar

This talk will look at how Government approaches policy decisions related to energy and climate change, and the importance of networks in those decisions. It will look in detail at the decision to close coal fired power stations in the UK, announced in 2016, and what lessons it might provide for those trying to influence Government policy. The talk will also consider the political dynamics of energy and climate change under the current Government.

Virtual event details

This virtual lecture will consist of a 45 minute presentation from Guy Newey, followed by a 15 minute Q&A chaired by UCL Energy Institute Director Prof Neil Strachan.

About the speaker

Guy Newey is Director of Strategy and Performance at the innovation agency, Energy Systems Catapult. Guy joined Energy Systems Catapult in September 2018 after being energy and climate adviser to Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark. Guy was previously Special Adviser to former Energy and Climate Change Secretary Amber Rudd. During his time in Government, he was closely involved with all of the major energy decisions related to energy and climate, including the closure of coal-fired power stations by 2025, the Paris climate change agreement and the decisions to make the electricity system operator independent.

Before joining Government, he was Head of Policy at energy supplier, Ovo Energy and worked at the think tank, Policy Exchange, where he was Head of Environment and Energy. He was previously a journalist, including three years as a foreign correspondent in Hong Kong for the newswire, AFP.

Guy oversees policy, marketing and communications, and insight for the Catapult, as well as being responsible for developing and implementing the Catapult’s overall strategy.
