Lecturer's Abstract

Jesse Reiser discusses a series of ongoing projects at his practice RUR Architecture, from conception to realisation. He explores the complex interrelationships that recent projects Taipei Music Center and the Kaohsiung Port Terminal in Taiwan weave between technology, expression, and politics. 

Jesse also draws from the firm’s recent book Projects and Their Consequences, and proposes an alternate understanding of the architectural project in different firms.

Biography

Jesse Reiser is a principal of RUR Architecture in New York, co-founder of design firm Reiser + Umemoto and a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. He has been a fellow of the American Academy in Rome since 1985 and became an honorary fellow of the University of Tokyo, School of Engineering in 2014.

In 2014 RUR Architecture received the Progressive Architecture Award for their work on the Kaohsiung Port Terminal in Taiwan, and another of their projects, O-14, has received international honors, including an AIA Design Award, the Concrete Industry Board’s 2009 Award of Merit and the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 2009 Diamond Award.

The work of Reiser + Umemoto has been published and exhibited widely; the practice was awarded the Chrysler Award for Excellence in Design in 1999, and the Academy Award in Architecture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000.
