IAS/Urban Lab Waste: Christoph Lindner on 'Global Garbage'
Launch of the Institute of Advanced Studies and Urban Laboratory Waste Public Lecture Series with Prof Christoph Lindner, Dean of The Bartlett, UCL Faculty of the Built Environment

Christoph Lindner is an urban and cultural theorist whose work spans the humanities, social sciences, and art and design fields, including architecture, visual culture, geography, media studies, and urban planning and design. He is Professor of Urban Studies and the incoming Dean of The Bartlett at UCL (from Sept 2019).
In the 2016 edited collection Global Garbage: urban imaginaries of waste, excess, and abandonment, Lindner and his co-editor Miriam Meissner examine the ways in which garbage, in its diverse forms, is produced, managed, experienced, imagined, circulated, concealed, and aestheticized in contemporary urban environments and across different creative and cultural practices. Across locations such as Beirut, Detroit, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Manchester, Naples, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Tehran, the book examines how, and under what conditions, contemporary imaginaries of excess, waste, and abandonment perpetuate – but also sometimes counter – the imbalances of power that are frequently associated with the global metropolitan condition.
Prof José Torero Cullen, Head of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Geomatic & Environmental Engineering at UCL will act as a respondent to the lecture, which is chaired by Urban Laboratory Director Dr Clare Melhuish, and introduced by IAS Director Prof Tamar Garb.
All welcome. Please note that there may be photography and/or audio recording at some events and that admission is on a first come first served basis. Please follow this FAQ link for more information.
