About
Our public lecture series, Constructing Realities, runs throughout the autumn and spring on selected Thursday evenings.
We will hear from artists, architects, designers, scientists and other interdisciplinary practitioners who are at the forefront of their industry and understand how different disciplines influence and challenge the thinking of other practices. The series is discursive, interactive and offers opportunities for students, academics, industry professionals and the wider public to learn from and question the people who are constructing the realities we inhabit.
Topics include dissident architecture, representing loss and bio-materials.
Schedule
17 October: Anastasia Perahia Dede and Valeria Muteri

Rewriting Spatial Narratives – Sicilian Mafia Dissidence and the Disappearing Ladino in Greece

Anastasia presents a video exploring the nexus of language and landscape through the disappearance of judeao-spanish/ladino in Greece.
Valeria’s intervention includes a performative reading from a ‘balcony’ representing the main dissident found in Castelvetrano, Sicily, Giuseppe Cimarosa. Son of a cousin of the current mafia Godfather, Giuseppe responded to the family by declaring his position against the mafia publicly. The project is an homage to his brave act of resistance.
Invited guests include Anna Sergi, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Essex with a specialism in organised crime.
Food and drink will be available to purchase from Gaia Pulses at The Baths after the event.
