On Geodesign and Collaborative Negotiation - Carl Steinitz
This presentation will provide an overview of geodesign….of changing geography by intentional design.
One of the major challenges in creating designs for sustainable urban futures is the ability to work across government agencies and to break down traditional bureaucratic barriers in favor of truly collaborative planning. Currently the state-of-play in many countries and cities is that a series of long and short term plans are created by different government agencies and stakeholder groups. For example, a metropolitan or city government will likely have separate land-use, transport and green infrastructure plans which exist as independent plans which might cross reference each other but which are designed and implemented by their respective agencies. These influence private stakeholder decisions which in turn influence government. This siloed approach to planning means there are problems in the design, coordination and sequencing of critical projects.
Negotiation is the most important method for arriving at political consensus regarding future change. It is applicable across size and scale. Fundamental to the success of a collaborative geodesign process is the creation of an easily understood graphic language based on shared diagrams of proposed policies and projects. This presentation describes several aspects of a digital, diagram-based geodesign workflow. It will focus on comparison of alternatives and negotiation, organized in a digitally supported geodesign negotiation method aimed at achieving an agreed design.
The case study will be the future of the Greater London CAMKOX region via the implementation of a two day CASA workshop.

Carl Steinitz
Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning
Harvard University
Carl Steinitz is the Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning Emeritus at Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Honorary Professor at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, University College London. He began his affiliation with the Harvard Laboratory for Computer Graphics and Spatial Analysis in 1965. In 1984, the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) presented Professor Steinitz with the Outstanding Educator Award for his “extraordinary contribution to environmental design education” and for his “pioneering exploration in the use of computer technology in landscape planning”. He has been honored as one of Harvard University’s outstanding teachers. Professor Steinitz is principal author of “Alternative Futures for Changing Landscapes”, Island Press, 2003, and author of “A Framework for Geodesign”, Esri Press, 2012. He has lectured and given workshops at more than 150 universities, and has several honorary degrees.
