Delivering sustainable and climate change resilient infrastructure: Lessons from the world

Dr Juliet Mian and Pasquale Capizzi from Arup join us for the first event in our sustainable infrastructure lecture series.

According to the UN over 60% of the land projected to become urban by 2030 is yet to be built, mostly in South-East Asia and Africa.

Development will likely test planning and design capacities, while climate change will compound risk and affect ecosystem services at an unprecedented scale.

Juliet Mian (Arup Associate Director, Technical Director of The Resilience Shift) and Pasquale Capizzi (Arup Associate, Lead of Climate Resilience, Arup International Development) will present practices from around the world in sustainable and resilient infrastructure (Kenya, Myanmar, China, Mexico, Mozambique, Japan, South-Africa, the US and Europe) and attempt to draw lessons for replication.

The lecture will begin at 18:30 and will be followed by a networking reception from 19:30. Please note that places for this event are limited and seating will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

About our speakers

Dr Juliet Mian – Technical Director, Resilience Shift, and Associate Director, Infrastructure Advisory, Arup.

Juliet is Technical Director of the Resilience Shift, the global initiative to improve the resilience of critical infrastructure, supported by Lloyd's Register Foundation and hosted by Arup with a diverse range of grantees. As an experienced Civil Engineer of over 20 years’ experience working on major projects for Network Rail, Highways England, HS2, the National Infrastructure Commission and many others both in the UK and overseas, Juliet has an in-depth understanding of infrastructure and specialises in the resilience of infrastructure systems.

As a civil engineer by training, Juliet’s PhD was in earthquake hazard and risk. In designing facilities that would continue to function under earthquake loading, she was also curious about the wider context of her projects, for example whether local housing, roads and infrastructure were adequate, and whether other hazards were treated consistently. This is how Juliet found herself specialising in infrastructure risk and resilience. 

Pasquale Capizzi, Arup Associate, Lead Climate Resilience Focus Area at Arup International Development.

Pasquale is an urban planning professional, specialised in urban climate resilience and infrastructure. He has 17 years of experience in designing and managing programmes in cities of Africa, Asia & Latin America. He currently leads the climate resilience portfolio of Arup International Development and leads on several climate resilient infrastructure and urban or regional resilience assignments in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Myanmar Nepal, Ghana, and Benin.

He previously served in the United Nations for 15 years. As UN-Habitat Chief Technical Advisor in Myanmar he worked within Ministries to develop the national and local level climate change policies and the country INDC for the COP21. As Head of Programme of UN-Habitat in Mozambique and Chief Technical Advisor in Southern Africa he has contributed to establish the International Centre for Disaster Management, Sustainability and Urban Resilience (Dimsur) and supervised resilient infrastructure projects in Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique.
