Affordable Housing and Big Data – New Perspectives on Analysing Housing Markets and Data

Coordinated by doctoral students, Thomas Weston and Yunlong Huang, from The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management.

Academics, doctoral students and industry professionals in related fields from within the Bartlett, UCL, and beyond, are warmly invited to join us at this one day conference to exchange ideas and discuss the potential directions of future research in affordable housing and big data. 

Housing unaffordability is not a new problem; it is an ever-present issue, the theories behind which are frequently addressed, and the practicalities of which are experienced worldwide. While data has always been utilised to understand the problems associated with housing supply and demand, with the increasing presence of big data, we want to explore how big data techniques and advances have been applied in disciplines such as housing and urban economics.

Combining data sources on disaggregated yet related variables such as land value, sale transactions, planning (zoning) permissions, and spatial dimensions such as proximity to different amenities, will not only further our understanding of the housing markets, but may lead to practical solutions for optimal housing market design, planning regulations, landlord and tenant laws.

By bringing together research from related fields and engaging in interdisciplinary learning, this conference aims to identify new areas for potential collaboration. Through this flexible thinking and collaborative research we can consider how merging affordable housing with big data can provide dynamic solutions to current affordable housing problems.
