Water Works?

Join us at the second Urban Laboratory Policy Seminar for a panel discussion on water justice.
Accessing and providing water in poorly
resourced African urban contexts is a significant challenge. The case studies
which this panel draws together from across three different African cities, focus
attention on the range of actors involved in shaping water infrastructure and
access to water. They explore the potential for ambitious solutions to entrenched
water injustice; and consider how it might be the everyday practices of users
which can enable access to water. The film and the two papers which we will
hear consider large scale institutional investments, locally-based
associations, and the everyday practices of water users in Lilongwe, Malawi,
Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
We will screen the short film 'Lilongwe Water Works? A research documentary on the dynamics of water provisioning and access in informal settlements' (2017), followed by a discussion with director Maria Rusca (University of Uppsala), and talks from Susana Neves Alves (Cambridge University) and Pascale Hofmann (DPU, UCL).
