Construction tech: innovation founded on lean theory and BIM technology | Professor Rafael Sacks
Join us for our next keynote lecture as we welcome Prof Rafael Sacks from Technion – Israel Institute of Technology.
Prof Sacks will be reviewing some of the most promising recent digital innovations in construction through the lens of academia and industry.

Construction tech: innovation founded on lean theory and BIM technology
The first Constructs lecture of 2019 welcomes Professor Rafael Sacks from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology.
This decade has seen a surge in innovation in construction. Some of that innovation has emerged within existing architectural, engineering and construction companies, and some from established software vendors, but the most exciting developments are in construction tech start-up companies.
Most of these build directly on the theoretical and technological foundations provided by lean construction thinking and BIM technology. In this lecture, Prof Sacks will review some of the most promising innovations, tracing their development back to the fundamental and applied research in academia and in industry that make them possible.
The lecture will begin at 18:30 and will be followed by a networking reception from 19:30. Please note that places for this event are limited and seating will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

About our speaker
Rafael Sacks is Professor at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. His research interests are focused on the synergies of BIM and lean construction, two related areas that are revolutionising the tools and practices used in the construction, civil engineering and architecture fields.
He established the BIM and Virtual Construction Laboratories at the Technion’s National Building Research Institute, whose research includes:
- development of BIM-enabled lean production control systems
- BIM systems for earthquake search, rescue and recovery including reconstruction of building information models of damaged buildings from laser scans
- innovative approaches to interoperability for BIM
- design for safety using virtual construction models
In the area of lean construction, Prof Sacks has undertaken several projects for industry and government. In the course of his work, he and his students devised the LEAPCON management simulation game, widely recognised by academics and practitioners and used internationally in universities and industry.

This event is part of Bartlett 100, a year-long celebration in 2019 to mark 100 years since the naming of the faculty. Find out more.

What is lean construction?

Lean construction is the term used to define the application of lean thinking principles to the construction environment.
The idea of lean thinking - based on the fast assembly times, low material waste and responsive volume outputs of lean manufacturing - has value at its core. The adaptation of lean thinking to construction means scrutinising the management of a business to identify value and streamline work processes.
