Join us as we welcome Branko Milanović for a special public lecture discussing the evolution in global income inequality and focusing on its political implications; in particular, the rise of the middle class in Asia, income stagnation of the rich countries’ middle classes, migration as part of globalisation, and the emergence of global plutocracy (global top 1 percent).
This lecture will be chaired by IIPP Director and joint winner of the 2018 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Knowledge, Mariana Mazzucato.
The last quarter century of globalisation has witnessed the largest reshuffle of global incomes since the Industrial Revolution. The main factor behind the "reshuffle" was the rise of China and, to a slightly lesser extent, all of Asia. Over a 20-year period, this drove the global Gini index (gauge of economic inequality measuring income distribution or, less commonly, wealth distribution among a population) down by about 2 points across almost 100 countries. By tracking this activity, we are able to show the underlying elements that drove the change. Three changes stand out which will be discussed on the night, as well as the implications of those changes.

Branko Milanović is a Visiting Presidential Professor at the Graduate Center City University of New York and Senior Scholar at the Stone Center on Socio-economic Inequality. Milanovic’s main area of work is income inequality, in individual countries and globally, including in pre-industrial societies.
He has published articles on these topics in The Economic Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Development Economics and Journal of Economic Literature among others.
His most recent book, Global Inequality: A New Approach for the Age of Globalization (2016), addresses economic and political issues of globalisation. It was translated in sixteen languages and awarded the 2017 Bruno Kreisky Prize and 2018 Hans Matthöfer Prize.
Branko was awarded (jointly with IIPP Director Mariana Mazzucato) the 2018 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Knowledge. He is currently working on a new book entitled Capitalism, alone.
Mariana Mazzucato (PhD) is Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at UCL, and is Founder and Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (IIPP).
