IIPP Co-Hosts UCL Space Week Workshop: Space Missions, Economic Value and Public Purpose

The workshop, part of UCL Space Week 2018, will feature speakers from IIPP, Mullard, and the European Space Agency. 

Space agencies are developing policies in response to the increasing emphasis on societal grand challenges, the rise of a new wave of space companies (often referred to as “New Space”) and the global trend towards interconnecting and interlinking of industries (a trend referred to as Industry 4.0).

What role is there for space agencies in this context?
Do we see opportunities for new forms of public, private (and other) patnerships?
What socio-economic benefits are currently envisaged?
Are we being bold enough in our plans for space?

The workshop will examine the key challenges and opportunities for space research, innovation and exploration with a view to desirable socio-economic impacts. In particular we will use the concept of 'public purpose' and 'mission-oriented innovation' to question the traditional ways in which economic value in space is measured.  

Chaired by Prof. Mariana Mazzucato, Director of IIPP, the workshop will begin with presentations followed by a Q&A panel on the subject “Space for Public Purpose” with opportunities for contribution from the audience.
