Our talk will draw on two research hubs: ‘Refugee Self-Reliance and Humanitarian Action in Urban Markets’, a joint programme of the Humanitarian Affairs Team (Save the Children UK) and the Bartlett Development Planning Unit (UCL); and 'Refugee (self-)support in the city', led by O. P. Jindal Global University in India and funded by the International Institute for Environment and Development.The two projects explore the issues of urban refugee self-reliance in Thessaloniki (Greece), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Halba (Lebanon), and New Delhi (India), and how humanitarian programming – especially livelihoods – meets refugee development needs and aspirations. We will also emphasise the role and the socio-economic practices of city authorities, humanitarian actors, and local citizens in urban markets.
