What is Critical Heritage Studies?

As UCL launches a new joint Centre for Critical Heritage Studies with the University of Gothenburg, this one-day conference studies what the term 'critical heritage' means.
The Centre for Critical Heritage Studies is a collaborative international, interdisciplinary research centre, jointly run between the Univeristy of Gothenburg (UG) and UCL. The centre, which explores the overarching theme of 'heritage as global challenge', will act as a focal point for critical heritage studies research and is funded by UG for six years from April 2016. It will conduct joint research, initially under five main thematic areas:
- Making Global Heritage Futures
- Curating the City
- Embracing the Archive
- Heritage and Wellbeing
- Science and Heritage/Critical Conservation Studies
At the University of Gothenburg, it operates as a collaboration between four faculties. At UCL, the Institute of Archaeology act as the lead department in the partnership, which involves researchers from a number of other departments including Anthropology, Information Studies, and the UCL Urban Laboratory.
