Mapping Through Performance

As part of Urban Lab's partnership with Somerset House and A(by)P for the Mapping the City exhibition, we present 'Mapping Through Performance', a journey exploring urban ritual.

Taking place between the 18th century neoclassicism of Somerset House, and the mid-century modernism of the Southbank, The Cult of Rammellzee will explore urban ritual following their own unique path. Through the mediums of graffiti, lettering, skateboarding, and music they map the new zones of sacred energy for London.

The Cult are a group of thirty artists who produce rituals and performances based on themes such as gentrification and manifested through sample elements of 1980s hip-hop culture. They work in honour of the graffiti artist / performance artist Rammellzee who died in 2010.

The performance is free and drop-in, part of Mapping the City, an exhibition on street and graffiti art scenes, curated by A(by)P at Somerset House between 22 January - 15 February 2015. It is the first public event to take place in the recently renovated New Wing. Admission is free.

Urban Lab's support for the performance is part of its new research and events programming delving into the representations of urban areas across multiple forms of media, Cities Imaginaries. The programme incorporates the City Centre, formerly hosted in the Department of English at UCL.

A(by)P is a a collaborative organisation that curates, produces and enables art. Urban Laboratory Steering Committee member Rafael Schacter is a member of the collective.
