“There are very few educational degrees relating to healthy buildings in Taiwan, and there are very few professionals specialising in health, wellbeing and sustainable buildings. According to the vice president of IWBI ASIA, I am the first in Taiwan to graduate from a research institute specialising in healthy buildings. This makes my resume very competitive.”

Industry views

It is about time we turn to a more human-centric design, focusing on occupant health and wellbeing but without compromising our environment. This change in culture can only be implemented through the education of new engineers. This MSc course is aspiring to equip new engineers with the right skills to face the challenges of the future.

Dr Anastasia Mylona, Research Manager, Chartered Institution of Building Services

We spend over half of lives in buildings and we have little understanding what impact poor air quality is having on our health. The next generation of smartphones will no doubt measure a range of pollutants including; VOC’s, and CO2 levels and other pollutants and this is when this whole debate will get really serious

Sean Lockie, Director - Head of Carbon and Sustainability Services, Faithful+Gould

The MSc course content looks like it will provide individuals with a well rounded knowledge of how buildings effect occupants. This is an essential ingredient for approaching design in an imaginative way using first principles. It also provides a conduit to emerging best practice in the building industry.

Trevor Keeling CEng MCIBSE WELL AP, Senior Engineer, Buro Happold

I was very excited to learn more about the course content of the proposed MSc - it covers subjects critical to the design of better buildings and cities to support the UN Sustainable Development goal of resilience and sustainability. I have no hesitation in recommending this course of study for architects wishing to develop their knowledge and skills for health and wellbeing of users.

Lynne Sullivan OBE, Architect, RIBA - LSA Studio

As a member of the International WELL Building Institute, I am very privileged to be supporting UCL in the development of the new MSc: Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings. UCL has taken the lead at identifying this gap in education in the built environment and  look forward to supporting course work development that impacts the health & wellbeing of the people who occupy our buildings.

Ann Marie Aguilar, International Well Building Institute (IWBI), Arup Associates

The launch of a new course that bridges the gap between the health and built environment sectors presents a very exciting and welcome opportunity to create a new generation of industry practitioners that will challenge existing definitions for sustainable buildings and of how we design our homes and communities.

Marylis Ramos, Director, Research & Sustainability, PRP Architects

We’re looking to the Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings Msc to nurture a new generation of designers, engineers, analysts and clients who can seize the huge opportunity presented by our renewed focus on wellbeing. Clients increasingly want design teams that truly understand how the built environment impacts health, happiness and productivity. It’s an interdisciplinary challenge requiring new skills and collaboration between industry and academia.
