Duties and responsibilities

The UCL Institute for Environmental Design & Engineering (UCL IEDE) delivers world-leading research, teaching and enterprise towards a goal of making our buildings, towns and cities better places in which to live, with a focus on health, human well-being, productivity, energy use and climate change.

We are seeking a post-doctoral research fellow/senior fellow to take part in a new Wellcome Trust funded project named HEROIC (Health and Economic impacts of Reducing Overheating in Cities). This is an exciting opportunity to engage with experts from multiple fields in an inter-disciplinary project which aims to assess the effects of climate and environmental change on health, and explore the most effective ways to minimise harmful effects for the most vulnerable populations.

The successful candidate will mainly contribute to the modelling work package, which aims to simulate local temperatures and urban heat island intensity for a range of cities, each with distinct characteristics. The modelling will be done by performing ~1km resolution regional simulations using the WRF (Weather Research Forecasting) model in combination with detailed land use categories to characterise the urban heat island for different cities and conditions. Part of the project will involve classifying and categorising urban land use categories for study cities, for example, using the Local Climate Zones system, using existing geospatial tools and techniques.

The project is funded for a period of 3 years from September 2020, and is led by UCL, with partners at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Exeter University, as well as international collaborators.

Key requirements 

The ideal candidate is a highly quantitative and analytical person with a PhD or equivalent experience in physics, climate, environmental, or atmospheric sciences or a related quantitative field, and a keen interest in multi-disciplinary research. They should have experience of configuring and running climate or meteorological models (e.g. WRF) and analysing output, and ideally, experience of using large geographical and environmental datasets.
