A world-leading centre
UCL IEDE is a world-leading centre of research and teaching excellence and has received a series of awards, grants and accolades to confirm this.
Our Faculty, The Bartlett has been ranked #1 in the world in Architecture and the Built Environment for the second year in a row, and remains #1 in the UK for the tenth year in a row, in the QS World University Subject Rankings 2024.
In the latest national research assessment (REF 2021), we are number one for Research Power in the built environment, and 91% of our research has been deemed ‘World Leading’ and ‘Internationally Excellent’.
Through its work with the Complex Built Environment Systems group, IEDE has been awarded a historic three EPSRC Platform Grants, prestigious awards of funding given to what the EPSRC calls ‘well-established, world-leading research groups’.
In 2013 IEDE was named by the Royal Academy of Engineering as a Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design.
In 2010 IEDE received the Happold Brilliant Prize for its Environmental Design and Engineering MSc programme, judged by an international CIBSE panel.

The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources
We’re part of The Bartlett School of Environment Energy and Resources - home to specialist institutes in energy, environment, resources and heritage in The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment.
The School’s role is to help the Institutes establish themselves and grow, enabling them to focus on and develop their academic direction and strategies.
Through our teaching and research the School addresses the complex global challenges of sustainability transition through multidisciplinary collaboration.
