Alumni story: Advancing energy cooperation in Southeast Asia

Reza Adriawan is a graduate of the Sustainable Resources: Policy, Economics and Transitions MSc graduate and now Special Officer to the Executive Director at the ASEAN Centre for Energy.
Reza’s path from Jakarta to London, and now across Southeast Asia, reflects the power of education and purpose-driven policy. With early career experience coordinating renewable energy projects in Indonesia, Reza turned to the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources to strengthen his understanding of the systems and strategies driving global energy transitions.
We have vast resources, but policy challenges were holding us back from meeting net zero targets. I wanted to change that, and ISR aligned perfectly with my mission.
At UCL, Reza found a globally inclusive learning environment.
The faculty were genuinely receptive to different ideas and contexts. I often applied the Indonesian energy transition context to my assignments, and the support I received was incredible.
After graduating, Reza joined a UK-based consultancy advancing UK–Indonesia green collaboration. That led to his current role at the ASEAN Centre for Energy, where he supports high-level diplomacy across 10 nations to enhance energy security, infrastructure, and climate finance.
The networks I built during my time at ISR were instrumental. They helped me engage meaningfully with global stakeholders, from MPs to regional energy leaders.
Looking forward, Reza sees cooperation as central to solving climate challenges.
In a world full of uncertainty, collaboration is more important than ever. ISR gave me the economic and policy grounding to contribute to regional and global solutions.
His advice to future students?
Find your mission. At the very least, identify the issue you want to solve and bring that into the programme with an open mind and collaborative spirit.
