Mobility as a Service Lab (MaaSLab)

The Mobility as a Service Lab (MaaSLab) is an enthusiastic multidisciplinary research group looking advance research and be at the forefront of the ever-changing transport sector. Springing from the Urban Transport and Energy Group at UCL Energy Institute, MaaSLab aims to develop cutting-edge research regarding new mobility services, providing in-depth insights and guidance about Mobility as a Service to industry and the public sector.

Today, mobility is crossing a new digital frontier in terms of connectivity, the infrastructure and interoperability. Our innovative research becomes meaningful if viewed in tandem with the goals of the Institute, in delivering world-leading learning, research and policy support on the challenges of green energy and the smart cities vision. MaaSlab’s impactful results shape future policies and our activities, approaches and aims help create a more sustainable horizon for transport and mobility.

Our research interests

MaaSLab’s research focuses on new mobility technologies for passenger and freight, such as autonomous vehicles and drones, new mobility concepts, such as Mobility as a Service and Urban Air Mobility, and their integration with the existing transport systems (multimodality).

MaaSLab’s expertise lies on four main topics:

Societal Changes & Consumer Behaviour

New Mobility Services & Business models

Transport Policy

Mobility as a service in teaching

The MaaSLab group contributes to teaching for the Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment MSc and Energy Systems and Data Analytics MSc programmes. It also undertakes the supervision of several Master's and PhD students, whose topics are related to transport.

Energy Systems and Data Analytics MSc

Energy Systems and Data Analytics MSc is at the core of MaaSLab's teaching activities with the delivery of the Energy and Transport Data Analytics module, focusing on the study and modelling of transport related complexities and the interconnections with energy systems. MaaSLab also supervises a large number of dissertation on the intersection of energy and transport including the study of Vehicle to Grid technologies, the implications that autonomous vehicles have to energy demand and the exploration of energy efficient last mile logistics concepts.
