UCL-Energy shipping expert comments on shipping industry progress ahead of COP21

Dr Tristan Smith, Lecturer in Energy and Transport at UCL Energy Institute, has commented on the recent key messages launched by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) ahead of Paris COP in December:

'International shipping is a significant and growing source of green house gas (GHG) emissions. But regulating shipping’s GHG at IMO is made difficult by the lack of clarity on the expected contribution to overall decarbonisation, e.g. in line with a 2 degree pathway, that should come from the sector'.

COP 21 in Paris provides an opportunity to clarify this expectation, and the work of the Shipping in Changing Climates project , that we are involved in, shows that not only are significant reductions in absolute emissions possible, but that the sooner we start the better, for both shipping companies and world trade'.
