Research summary

As part of the Shipping and Changing Climates (SCC) project funded by EPSRC and industry partners, Nishat uses social research methods to continue his research interests in implementation of energy efficiency measures and barriers to their uptake, as well as investigating policies to accelerate transitions to a low carbon industry. He is also responsible for managing the work package dealing with supply and demand interaction and evolution of the shipping industry. Nishat is also involved in various other grant funded and consultancy research projects investigating energy efficiency in shipping.

Nishat’s doctoral research focussed on the barriers that are hindering uptake of energy efficient technologies and operations in shipping. He is actively engaged with the shipping industry through his written work and communicating his research with the industry through reports and forums. During his doctoral studies, Nishat was seconded to Forum for the Future to research in the Sustainable Shipping Initiative’s finance and technology work streams.

Nishat is a Research Associate at the University College London (UCL) Energy Institute, Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources. He gained his PhD in Energy and Transport (Market failures and barriers affecting energy efficient operations in shipping) from UCL in 2014. Nishat has a BSc in Management and an MSc in Energy, Trade & Finance, both from Cass Business School, City University.
