Report on understanding child-centred urban disaster risk reduction in Asia

MSc Urban Development Planning Alumnus Don Brown has recently co-written a report for the Asian Cities Climate Resilience Working Paper Series with Dr David Dodman, DPU teaching fellow and Senior Researcher at the IIED.

The research was undertaken for IIED in partnership with Plan International. During the research, Don visited Dhaka, Kathmandu, Manila and Jakarta, where he met with different groups of children (such as street children, working children and squatter and slum children), and conducted numerous key informant interviews. The research found that children who work on the streets or in low-income informal settlements are among those most vulnerable to environmental risks, such as natural hazards and climate change, yet there is little provision for young boys and girls in urban disaster risk reduction programmes.

The report, entitled ‘Understanding children’s risk and agency in urban areas and their implications for child-centred urban disaster risk reduction in Asia: Insights from Dhaka, Kathmandu, Manila and Jakarta’, has been published by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). The report was produced in partnership with Plan International, and funded by Sida, the Swedish International Development Coordination Agency.
