Professor Haim Yacobi has received The Bartlett Public Policy Support Fund for the project ‘Modernist Architecture in Marrakech: Transforming Modernist Heritage Public Policy'.
Together with Dr Safiya El Ghmari (College of Engineering and Architecture International University of Rabat) and Arc. Lahbib El Moumni (MAMMA. - Mémoire des architectes modernes marocains), Professor and Co-Programme Leader of the Health in Urban Development MSc, Haim Yacobi, has received the grant for the project 'Modernist Architecture in Marrakech: Transforming Modernist Heritage Public Policy'.
The project aims to democratise access to the Marrakech's modernist cultural wealth, and to transform public policy towards modernist architectural heritage in the city. This involves creating a repository accessible to all and ensuring that modernist architectural heritage is preserved and becomes a shared experience for a diverse audience.
Crucially, this project goes beyond being an archival effort. It is also a policy-oriented project, as it seeks to demonstrate the benefits of embracing digital tools in transforming public policy towards the built environment in Marrakech, serving as a model for future initiatives within Morocco and beyond.
Professor Haim said: “This grant is a wonderful opportunity to explore a hidden gem of Marrakech’s built environment – the modernist buildings which are often overlooked. We hope to be able not just to document some buildings but also to transform the public policy towards them and to include them as part of the city heritage.”
