Cities as bubble mirrors

21 January 2012

DPU's PhD Student Vicente Sandoval has been awarded "runner up" in the UCL 'Research Images as Art / Art Images as Research' 2011/12 organised by Graduate School.

Cities as bubble mirrors. by Vicente Sandoval

The Picture catches part of the "Tall Tree & the Eye" artwork by Anish Kapoor in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Although mirror balls reflect almost everything around, there is no photographer close. This no-edited picture tries to illustrate how cities, as Bubble mirrors, replicate the image of other cities around, for better or for worse.

"My current research is about disaster risk and globalisation in the context of cities network. So, what I tried to "reflect" with this picture is how cities under globalisation tend to concentrate, replicate and distribute one or uncountable elements of the social dynamics such economic patterns, urbanisation processes, cultural values, and in the case of my research, disaster risk"

Vicente took this picture in Bilbao, Spain, since Bilbao was the case study of his MSc. thesis last year.
