High Stakes, High Hopes tracks the building of urban theorising in a decade-long urban research and teaching partnership in Cape Town, South Africa. In its methodologies and creative evolution, the book's author Sophie Oldfield demonstrates how urban theorising can be reoriented in community activism and township struggles as sites of valid knowledge making. In doing so, she argues for building an archive of alternative kinds of city knowledges, experiments that work to inspire more varied forms of urban theorising.

About author: Sophie Oldfield is chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University and affiliated to the University of Cape Town. She has a track record of excellence in collaborative research practice, challenging how academics work in and between "university" and "community,” an approach which lies at the heart of her research and writing on cities of the Global South.

The launch will be introduced and moderated by Prof. Colin Marx and Prof. Barbara Lipietz.
