In 2014, UCL’s Bartlett Development Planning Unit celebrated its 60th Anniversary. In marking this milestone, the Director dedicated a portion of DPU’s reserve funds to a scholarship fund. These funds had been strategically built up over many years of collective endeavour in order to support the mission of the DPU. Six of the seven young scholars that have received awards will briefly present their research. This will be followed by a drinks party. The event will be chaired by Professor Julio D Davila, Director of the DPU. Apart from marking 65 years of DPU’s foundation, this event contributes to the celebrations marking 100 years since the naming of the Bartlett Faculty to commemorate benefactor Sir Herbert Henry Bartlett, a civil engineer and building contractor.
The research topics of the DPU60 scholars reflect the cutting edge, multi-disciplinary nature of current research being done at the DPU. These include: a critical examination of the co-production of natural capital in a context of climate change in Colombia; an understanding of the impact of climate change on the urban health of residents in a small African city; participatory urban land management and the right to the city in India; humanitarian interventions in the context of forced migrations in Europe; Chinese investment in Africa; subjectivity and queerness among displaced people; evictions and ‘resilient’ city making in the Philippines.

Words from Prof. Alan Penn, Dean of the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, UCL (TBC), Prof. Caren Levy (former DPU Director), Dr. Colin Marx (Director of the DPU MPhil/PhD programme).
