Life-cycle carbon emissions in the construction sector: Comparisons between China and the UK

Research supervisors: Dr Zhifu Mi and Dr Jing Meng
Start date: September 2019

Since 2013, China has become the largest emitter of CO2 in the world and the UK has been the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Europe. Among all emission sources, the building and construction industry contributes significant amounts due to its massive use of materials and equipment.

Under these circumstances, a study to explore and compare carbon emission patterns of the construction industry in China and the UK is needed. I intend to calculate consumption-based construction carbon emissions in China and the UK between 2004 and 2011 based on Input-Output model, to decompose incremental emission changes so as to identify the longitudinal impact of seven key driving factors, which is analyzed by LMDI mehod, and to measure the impact of international trade on construction carbon emissions based on an econometric model.

The results could promote a further understanding of construction emissions quantities and future emissions trends to shape more effective policies and more realistic mitigation targets for the construction sector.
