Overview

The School will be launching a new short course, Digital transformation in the built environment: aligning technology with business later in 2019, first announced by UCL last autumn. The course is funded by UCL Innovation and Enterprise through their lifelong learning team. 

Aimed at senior managers and policy makers involved in the construction industry, the course will address the challenges and opportunities created by the digital transformation of the built environment, driven by digitalisation. 

This course builds on successful events run with the Norwegian BI Business School in 2018. With representatives including senior managers from across the construction supply chain – from clients to policy makers – the session was well received by all participants. The need for high level education in this area became clear, as shown in the strong industry support the course is already receiving.

Course leaders, Dr Eleni Papadonikolaki and Dr Beth Morgan, are currently developing the course which will cover areas such as digital procurement, digital innovations, data management, and digital leadership among others. As well as benefitting from the expertise of UCL’s lifelong learning team, Eleni and Beth are using scenario-based teaching methods, developed by Harvard Business School and widely used in business schools globally.

According to the interests of participants, the course will be tailored to your requirements by using relevant course material and drawing on our networks of experts across industry and academia. We aim to deliver high-value, bespoke educational experiences that deliver tangible benefits to participants.

Format and course description

The course will be delivered through a mixture of interactive sessions, self-paced online learning and webinars taking place over a two week period amounting to 40 ECTS credits. A key part of the learning will involve networking and business environment simulation.

For UK participants there will be an option to attend a physical workshop instead of the provided webinar. 

The Harvard Case Study methodology will form a central part of the course. This is a teaching methodology that is particularly appropriate for this type of education: it uses a ‘flipped’ classroom style where participants are provided with scenarios and asked to address various issues relating to it.

The assessment will consist of online questionnaires, group coursework and an optional report. Upon completion, a certificate of attendance will be provided. 
 

Content and learning outcomes

Learning outcomes for participants:

  • Understand the unique challenges created by digitalisation in the built environment and the argument for adopting and implementing digital methods in construction, following recent national and international policies
  • Experience state-of-the-art industry practice by exploring carefully developed case studies from the UK and abroad
  • Develop demonstrable and hands-on solutions of how to champion and master the digital to address real-world challenges
  • Gain awareness of the challenges that digital technologies bring at individual, intra-organisational, project based and inter-organisational levels
  • Enable the integration of pre-existing knowledge from the business world with the challenge of digital transformation
  • Through new knowledge on digital technologies in construction and the assimilation of pre-existing business knowledge, develop new skills and make informed decisions for integrating businesses with digital technologies and processes
  • Interaction and coordination with like-minded professionals to co-create solutions without compromising competitive advantages in the digital built environment.
Course facilitators

Dr Eleni Papadonikolaki
Eleni’s research interests lie at the intersection of management, social science, and engineering. She has been looking at Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a domain of Information Technology (IT) for generating, sharing, and managing consistent information among various actors, based on the principles of information systems interoperability. As BIM and digital technologies affect collaboration in projects, Eleni has been researching BIM and digital transformation from an intra- and inter-organisational standpoint, and in particular through the lens of supply chains and networks. 

Dr Bethan Morgan
With extensive experience gained in policy and industry working across the construction sector, I am currently engaged with a range of projects relating to the digital transformation of the products and production of the built environment. This is an area I believe will continue to create profound opportunities and challenges for the sector in years to come. I believe strongly in the value of undertaking collaborative research and teaching that draws industry, policy bodies and academia together to produce relevant and high quality research

The course is currently being developed and will be launched in July 2019.
