DesignBuilder is working with experts from The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment to tap into new expertise that helps to reduce the environmental impact of older buildings.

DesignBuilder joins forces with UCL to lead the way in building performance modelling

Breadcrumb trail

DesignBuilder Software specialises in high-productivity simulation software that enables organisations to design high-performance buildings.

Building designers and analysts have traditionally used software like this to assess the performance of new buildings. But given the growing need to improve existing building stock too, DesignBuilder was keen to include ‘in-use’ assessment tools in their software as well.

Adding this extra functionality would mean that their customers could undertake energy efficiency, thermal comfort and other assessments, no matter the age of the building.

“This is a relatively new area in building performance simulation software,” explains Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate Nishesh Jain. “So having access to UCL’s expertise is enabling DesignBuilder to gain an important lead in their market.”

DesignBuilder is currently working with UCL on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), tapping into world-leading expertise and research from UCL’s Institute for Environmental Design & Engineering. The academic team at UCL are providing technical know-how, to ensure DesignBuilder’s new product is based on the very latest insights in this specialist field.

“Having access to UCL’s expertise is enabling DesignBuilder to gain an important lead in their market.”

By partnering with experts from The Bartlett, DesignBuilder has been able to work with a team with a strong track record of making a positive change in the built environment.

Managing Director of DesignBuilder Software David Cocking said: “Our partnership with UCL has given us the technical expertise and knowledge to develop innovative new tools, placing DesignBuilder at the forefront of research in this emerging field.”
