Structure

The MSc Connected Environments comprises 180 credits which can be taken full-time over 12 months or on a flexible modular basis of up to 5 years duration.

The programme structure is focused on learning by doing with a mix of lectures, demonstrations, prototyping, project work and design crits. Course modules will be practice based and support a living lab research approach. 

MSc Connected Environments
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight compulsory modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). Upon successful completion of 180 credits, you will be awarded a MSc in Connected Environments.

Optional modules

There are no optional modules for this programme.

Dissertation/report

Students must submit a 10,000 word dissertation. Support will be given through monthly face-to-face tutorials with the student's dissertation supervisor (academic / industry) throughout Term 3 and the summer period.

Teaching and learning

You will be assessed via a variety of methods including building physical objects, creating software workflows and visualisations as well as written assessments, reports and group-work. You will also complete a dissertation as the assessment method for the final research project.

Students spend about 27% of their time working on independent projects, 27% in laboratories and studios,  20% on assessments, 13% in lectures, and 13% on independent study.

Term 1
Students will learn various techniques for prototyping connected devices. The Connected Environments module is weighted towards the start of term and will introduce students to the “learn, build, critique” approach to be used throughout the course. In combination all 4 modules will expose students to the building blocks of creating a connected environment and will establish a shared ‘connected environment’ that they will curate throughout the programme.

Term 2
Students will apply their learning in group work and develop deeper technical skills whilst also exploring the more theoretical social, political and economic challenges of connected environments.

Term 3
The term 3 dissertation/final project brings together learning from the prior modules into an individual piece of work.

Part-Time and Modular/Flexible study

Full-time students study for 37.5 hours per week during term time. Typically, lectures and seminars occur on two days per week. Part-time and Flexible students normally attend half this amount.

•    Modular/Flexible students can take up to five years to gain 180 credits to complete the programme
•    The student registers at the start of every academic year, and chooses (via Portico) which modules to study in that academic year. The action of making a module choice generates an invoice from the Fees Office.
•    It is possible for a modular/flexible student to enrol onto the programme at the start of the academic year but decide not to take any modules in that year and defer study to another year. They will pay no fees for that year, but will remain an enrolled registered student of UCL.

All taught modules must be completed before completing the Dissertation.

NB: All Modular/Flexible students MUST re-enrol every autumn until they complete their studies, regardless of whether they intend to actively study that year or not. Student registration must remain current, otherwise it will be assumed the student has left the programme.
